IAA Transportation 2026 Opens in Hannover
A First Look at the Most Important Truck Debuts
IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover: Mercedes-Benz Trucks, MAN, Volvo, Scania, DAF, Renault Trucks and Ford Trucks are presenting new trucks, electric drivetrains and technical developments. Key topics include electromobility, range, aerodynamics and efficiency. IVECO is absent from the show, while numerous Chinese truck manufacturers are making an increasingly visible appearance.
On Monday, September 14, the Hannover exhibition grounds initially belonged to the media. One day before the official opening of IAA Transportation 2026, journalists had the opportunity to take a closer look at the most important new products from the major truck manufacturers.
So far, there is no single revolution defining the show. Instead, the direction of travel is becoming increasingly clear: battery-electric long-haul trucks are gaining range, diesel drivetrains continue to be optimized, aerodynamics are becoming even more important, and digital systems are playing a growing role in everyday transport operations.
MAN Expands Its Electric Truck Range
MAN is presenting its complete electric truck family at an IAA for the first time, ranging from the eTGL through the eTGM and eTGS to the eTGX. The lineup now covers applications from distribution transport to heavy long-haul operations.
Diesel technology remains relevant as well. The new D30 PowerLion is said to reduce fuel consumption by up to five percent compared with its predecessor.
Volvo Takes Electric Trucks to 700 Kilometers
At Volvo, one of the most notable new products is the FH Aero Electric with extended range. The truck is designed to cover up to 700 kilometers on a single charge.
One of the key technical developments is a compact electric axle that creates additional space for battery capacity. Megawatt charging is also intended to make the truck considerably more practical for electric long-haul transport. Alongside battery-electric vehicles, Volvo continues to pursue diesel, gas and future hydrogen solutions.
Scania Also Works on Aerodynamics
At Scania, the revised front-end design immediately stands out. The more aerodynamic shape shows that there is still potential to reduce drag even on conventional cab designs.
Information circulating at the show suggests that the displayed front-end design may not yet represent the final configuration in every detail.
Scania has been experimenting with modified front sections for some time. Camouflaged R- and S-series test vehicles with revised front designs and camera mirrors have already been spotted during earlier development programs.
Renault Trucks: New Diesel Technology and More Electric Range
Renault Trucks is also combining both worlds. The T High model year 2027, equipped with the new DE13-R engine, is making its world premiere in Hannover. The manufacturer claims up to four percent lower fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions compared with the previous generation.
The new Renault Trucks E-Tech T 780 represents the brand's latest step in electric long-haul transport. A range of up to 660 kilometers is said to be possible. A new architecture incorporating an electric axle creates additional space for battery capacity.
Mercedes-Benz Focuses on Batteries and Hydrogen
Mercedes-Benz Trucks is presenting the eActros Lowliner, a new version designed for high-volume transport applications. Two or three battery packs are available, allowing different combinations of range and payload.
At the same time, the company is showing the NextGenH2 Truck, the next stage in the development of its fuel-cell truck for long-haul transport. Around 100 vehicles are scheduled to gradually enter customer operation from the end of 2026.
DAF Expands Its Electric Flagship Range
DAF is also continuing to expand the electrification of its heavy-duty truck lineup. The XG Electric and XG+ Electric are now in series production.
With up to five LFP battery packs, ranges of more than 500 kilometers are possible depending on the application. DAF's electric range now extends from the 12-ton XB Electric to the large XG and XG+ long-haul cabs.
At the IAA, DAF is presenting its current product range with a strong focus on electric drivetrains, operating efficiency and driver comfort.
Ford Trucks Introduces the F-MAX GEN2.0
At Ford Trucks, the new F-MAX GEN2.0 takes center stage. Its Ecotorq Gen2 engine, aerodynamic improvements and new driver assistance systems are primarily intended to improve efficiency and operating costs.
Ford Trucks is also showing the F-LINE Construction and the fully electric F-LINE E. With its ConnecTruck services, digital connectivity between vehicles and fleets is also becoming increasingly important.
One Major Brand Is Missing: IVECO
Anyone looking for all of Europe's major truck brands will quickly notice an unusual gap: IVECO is not represented at IAA Transportation 2026 with its own manufacturer stand.
Given the current developments in alternative drivetrains and IVECO's long-standing importance in the European commercial vehicle market, its absence is particularly noticeable.
At the same time, the show is becoming more international. A large number of Chinese manufacturers are presenting trucks, vans and new drivetrain technologies in Hannover. Some of these names are already familiar in Europe, while others are likely to be appearing on the radar of many industry professionals for the first time.
