Borgward

Bremen, Germany

Bremen-based engineer Carl F. W. Borgward was one of the most innovative and versatile pioneers in the history of German commercial vehicles. No other car brand had such a close connection between its owner and its factory as Borgward. After successfully launching an open three-wheeled motorized cart called the “Blitz” in 1924, productivity, sales records, and the popularity of the Borgward, Goliath, and Lloyd brands continued unabated for decades. But product diversity and inventiveness also have their downsides. Borgward became increasingly bogged down and went bankrupt with his corporate empire in 1961.

The Borgward chronicle with Hansa-Lloyd from 1931, Goliath, and Lloyd

Today, the German car brands Borgward, Goliath, and Lloyd are only known to insiders. More than half a century has passed since Carl F. W. Borgward and his group of companies went bankrupt. However, long before World War II and until the 1960s, his vehicles played an important role in road traffic, not only in Germany. After 1945 alone, 99,018 commercial vehicles and 155,925 Isabella cars were produced under the Borgward name. Other passenger cars were also produced. From 1949 onwards, Goliath produced a total of 54,640 commercial vehicles and 59,301 passenger cars. Lloyd produced 24,660 delivery vehicles and 304,913 small cars. In this chronicle, we present the commercial vehicles of the three brands.
