Hanover Is Going Electric

IAA Transportation 2026 opens to the press in Hanover on September 14. The truck innovations announced so far show that battery-electric commercial vehicles are increasingly ready for long-haul transport. Volvo, Mercedes-Benz Trucks, Renault Trucks, and MAN are each pursuing different approaches. Hydrogen, efficient diesel engines, and automated driving also remain key topics—but the continued lack of adequate charging infrastructure threatens to slow progress on the road.

From September 15 to 20, Hanover will once again become an international meeting place for the commercial vehicle industry. One day earlier, the exhibition grounds will be reserved for the media. truckinfocus.com will be there to report on the most important premieres and developments.

The test drive program alone promises an event with plenty of action: 84 vehicles from 17 exhibitors will be available for test drives—around 40 percent more than in 2024. Most are battery-electric, joined by current diesel models and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Electric Long-Haul Takes Center Stage

One of the stars is likely to be the Volvo FH Aero Electric with extended range. A new electric axle creates additional space for batteries. Volvo claims a range of up to 700 kilometers. The heavy-duty electric truck will also be available for test drives in Hanover.

Volvo will also present a new generation of its electric FH, FM, and FMX ranges. An FH Aero with a hydrogen combustion engine is also expected to attract attention. The vehicle offers a preview of a possible market launch before 2030.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks is expanding the eActros family with a Lowliner for high-volume transport. Its particularly low fifth-wheel height allows the electric tractor to pull trailers with increased interior space, primarily used for lightweight but bulky goods.

A second major future technology from Mercedes-Benz is the NextGenH2 Truck. The fuel-cell tractor uses liquid hydrogen and is intended to offer a range of more than 1,000 kilometers. A small series of around 100 vehicles is scheduled to enter customer operations from the end of 2026.

Renault Returns with a World Premiere, MAN with a Broad Lineup

After sitting out the previous two IAA editions in 2022 and 2024, Renault Trucks is returning to Hanover. The manufacturer will stage the world premiere of the model year 2027 T High with the new DE13 R engine. Producing up to 540 hp, the engine is designed to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by as much as four percent compared with the previous generation. Renault Trucks will also place the E-Tech T 780 for electric long-haul transport in the spotlight.

MAN has announced a new TGX, among other highlights. Exactly what changes are behind that announcement will probably become clear on Press Day. What is already certain is that MAN will present its complete electric truck family, covering 12 to 50 metric tons, together for the first time. Other exhibits will include MCS-ready electric trucks, new driver assistance systems, and a TGX for heavy-duty transport with gross combination weights of up to 250 metric tons.

Scania and DAF have so far remained quiet about specific premieres, but both will have their own booths and vehicles available for test drives. DAF will put the XG Electric on the road and has scheduled a press conference for Press Day. Both brands could therefore still have a few surprises in store for Hanover.

IVECO, by contrast, will not participate in IAA Transportation 2026. The manufacturer presented its new “Spirito in Movimento” brand direction and its model year 2026 ranges at the IVECO Experience in Turin in early July. Vehicles on display there included the S-Way, Eurocargo, and Daily, along with the electric S-eWay, eDaily, eJolly, and eSuperjolly. The brand will not be entirely invisible in Hanover, however: individual IVECO vehicles will appear at the booths of body manufacturers.

New Challengers Move Closer

Alongside the long-haul F-MAX and the F-LINE Construction, Ford Trucks will showcase the battery-electric F-LINE E. With its electric heavy-duty truck and scheduled test drives, the company aims to demonstrate that it can also challenge Europe’s established manufacturers in zero-emission drivetrains.

BYD, Dongfeng, SANY Truck, Tesla, and other international manufacturers have also announced their participation.

SuperPanther is another of the new challengers. The eTopas 600, produced in Austria together with Steyr Automotive, will arrive in Hanover as a type-approved customer vehicle. truckinfocus.com has already reported in detail on the electric truck and its technology. At the IAA, it will now be interesting to see how the vehicle compares directly with models from the established manufacturers.

Among light commercial vehicles, Kia will present the electric PV5 family with cargo and passenger versions, a chassis cab, and specialized conversions. Maxus, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Ford Pro, and newcomer Flexis will round out the lineup.

Progress Is Waiting for Power

The IAA has long since become more than a stage for new vehicles. Software, automated driving, and intelligent trailers are playing an increasingly important role. For the first time, robot vans without a conventional driver’s cab will also be demonstrated. In the trailer sector, the focus will be on connectivity, electric refrigeration units, regenerative axles, aerodynamics, and digital diagnostics.

Charging infrastructure, however, is becoming the decisive bottleneck. Manufacturers are bringing electric trucks with longer ranges and megawatt charging technology to market while high-capacity grid connections, charging parks, and publicly accessible truck charging points remain in short supply. Approval procedures take too long, grid expansion is progressing too slowly, and reliable fast charging is still far from guaranteed—even along major long-haul corridors.

As a result, infrastructure risks holding back the very development in which manufacturers and transport operators are investing billions. A convincing electric truck alone is not enough: Without dependable access to electricity, technical market readiness cannot become an economically viable transport system.

The press photos accompanying this article show both previously announced innovations and current models from the respective manufacturers. However, all of the images were released before IAA Transportation begins—which means Hanover may still have one or two closely guarded surprises in store.
